If you’ve deployed AI, you’ve probably discovered the hard part isn’t building it — it’s controlling it.
Most organisations start their AI journey focused on capability: which model, which use case, which vendor. Then the models go live, agents start acting, and a new question surfaces that nobody planned for: who is actually in control of all this? That question is what AI governance answers.
What AI governance actually is
AI governance is the set of policies, processes and controls that determine how AI systems are introduced, used and managed across an organisation. It answers four practical questions about every AI system:
- What is it? — a reliable inventory of every model, agent and application.
- What can it access? — the data, systems and actions it’s permitted to reach.
- What is it allowed to do? — the decisions and actions it may take, and with what oversight.
- Is it staying inside acceptable risk? — continuous evidence that behaviour remains within policy.
Why it matters now — not later
Governance used to be a static policy document, reviewed once a year. That model breaks the moment AI becomes embedded in business processes. AI changes fast, vendors change faster, and agents act on their own. Governance has to become a living control framework — one that understands what AI systems are doing in real time and keeps them inside risk boundaries.
Governance vs. security: not the same thing
Security protects AI from attackers. Governance decides what AI is allowed to do in the first place — and holds someone accountable for it. You need both: governance sets direction, security makes it enforceable.
What good governance looks like
In practice, enterprise AI governance spans five connected dimensions: governance (direction and accountability), security & control (enforceable safeguards), risk & cost (managing trade-offs), observability (knowing what AI does) and assurance & operations (evidence and workflows). When all five work together, AI becomes an asset you can defend — to your board, your auditors and your customers.
