If any of these feel familiar, your AI is running ahead of your governance.
- You can’t list all your AI systems. No inventory means no control. Start with a complete audit — including shadow AI.
- Teams adopt AI tools without telling IT. That’s shadow AI. Make the governed path easy and enforce the unsafe path.
- No one owns the risk. Every model should have a named owner accountable for its use and risk.
- Policies exist but nothing enforces them. Governance without enforcement is fiction. Add runtime controls.
- You can’t answer “what AI touches customer data?” Map data flows and apply access controls by sensitivity.
- Agents act without oversight. Define what each agent may do, and log every action.
- Risk is assessed once and forgotten. Risk changes as models and usage change. Review continuously.
- Auditors ask questions you can’t answer. Build the evidence trail before you need it.
- Costs are a surprise. You don’t know what AI is consuming by business context. Bring usage and cost under visibility.
- You’re unsure if you’re compliant. If you can’t show it, assume you’re not. Map obligations to controls and evidence.
The fix isn’t more policies
It’s a living control framework: inventory, policy, risk, controls, observability and assurance working as one system. Start with the essentials, and mature continuously — the same way your AI estate grows.
